Fall 21 ORC Week Six: Painting & Flooring

It’s week six of the One Room Challenge and WOW this room has come a long way since we started working on it at the end of September! The drywall framing and installation phase of this project felt like an eternity, but replacing the stucco and paneled walls with new drywall completely transformed this space. Even with the additional stress of working with a contractor, it was worth it!

Except for electrical trim, all of our contracted work is complete! That means everything left on our to-do list is up to us. Zach and I love working on home renovation projects, and we’ve been impatiently waiting to get back in there and finish our family room. This will be the last time we’re sharing photos of our progress before the final reveal in two weeks, so get excited!! This is the home stretch and it’s almost time to see all of our hard work pay off!

Normally we take our time with painting, but because of the various delays we faced from other aspects of this renovation, we decided to rent a paint sprayer from Home Depot to speed things up. We prepped the room by taping off the windows, lights, and fireplace, which we’ll finish resurfacing before the reveal.

We’d originally planned to split up the painting work, but that all changed when we realized how big and heavy the paint sprayer was. Zach had to leave for a work trip on Monday afternoon, and we knew there was no way I could lift it into my car by myself to return it. That gave us a lot less time to get a ton of work done, but Zach was able to paint the entire room except for the ceiling in less than 24 hours.

I painted the ceiling the next day with a roller brush, and even though the texture from the paint sprayer is smoother, they blend pretty seamlessly. We used Zinsser Drywall Primer followed by two coats of BEHR Premium Plus Paint with an eggshell finish in the color Bit of Sugar. This is the same paint color we’ve used throughout our home, so there wasn’t much debate about the color we were choosing.

For the flooring we decided to go with a Luxury Vinyl Plank by Lifeproof in a really pretty Dusk Cherry color. This style of flooring locks together, which we like a lot more than the peel and stick flooring we used in our kitchen. I started installing the flooring yesterday afternoon, and I’m amazed at how quickly it’s going!

We decided to base the layout of the flooring on the front edge of the fireplace so we wouldn’t have any weirdly cut pieces in a focal point area. I used that as my starting point and loosely laid out pieces of flooring towards the back left corner of the room to get measurements for each one.

This flooring can technically be cut with an X-Acto knife and snapped in half, but because it has so many layers, I ended up using our table saw to speed things up. We’re about half way through the room and we’re SO happy with how everything is looking!

Next week I’ll be sharing our new mood board and the reason why we decided to make some revisions to our design plan. All I’ll say for now is we liked the plan before, but now we love it!
