Fall 21 ORC Week Seven: Design Revision

It’s week seven of the One Room Challenge which means we’re just ONE WEEK away from the final reveal!!! Even though we’re dying to show you photos of our progress, we’re holding off just a little longer and saving everything for next week. We can’t wait to show you guys our transformed family room so soon!

This week I’m taking you back to the very beginning of the challenge where I shared our design plan and mood board. We’ve made some pretty big changes since then, and I wanted to go into more detail about the reasons why, as well as share our new design with you! As a reminder, here was the original:

When we were putting together the design plan for our family room, the hardest part to figure out was the couch. This room is in our basement, and because the door is on an angle and the hallway is very narrow, getting a standard sized couch into the room isn't possible.

To complicate things even further, we wanted a material that would hold up to scratches, which is a constant problem for us with our two cats. This really limited our options, especially finding a couch that could be delivered by our deadline. Everything we read about cats and furniture said velvet was one of the best materials to go with, which is what led us to the green velvet couch shown above.

We were so happy with our bold couch choice until the other furniture and decor pieces started to arrive. The rug and flooring looked beautiful together and created such a sophisticated, neutral color palette, but they looked different in person than they did online. Luckily, we loved them even more and felt they fit our design style better than our original concept, but I kept thinking about the green couch and how out of place it would look with the other pieces.

We ended up cancelling our couch order and revisited our design plan with a new idea in mind. Although we really liked our plan before, we LOVE this one now! So druuuuumroooooll please:

Funnily enough, this Abisko Sectional from Article is the first couch I looked at and even created an initial mood board with! The more we thought about how we’d use our family room and the comfy, kick-back-and-relax feeling we wanted to create, the more we just knew we needed a sectional couch.

It was one of very few options we found that split completely in half, making it possible to get through the door. And a big plus, it would arrive by our deadline! Even though this choice means surrounding the couch with scratching posts for a little while, it was still the best option for our budget, timeline, and how we see ourselves using this room. Here’s our floor plan with everything laid out in the space:

Our final design includes decor from some of our favorite small businesses, a few investment pieces we plan to hold onto and pass down, and some budget friendly pieces from Target. We couldn’t be happier with this new direction for our family room!

After almost eight weeks of working non-stop, we finally get to see our vision come to life. We can’t wait to share it all with you next week in the final reveal!
