DIY Spice Cabinet

This weekend will be one month since we moved into our house! I’ve got to say, I’m pretty proud of everything we’ve accomplished in just a month. We still have plenty to unpack and organize, but with every picture we hang up and plant I find a spot for, it’s feeling more and more like home.

One project we immediately knew we wanted to do when we toured our house was convert the old ironing board cabinet in the kitchen into a spice cabinet. We use tons of spices for cooking and baking, so having them all within view and easy to grab was one of the ideas from our kitchen plan we were most excited for. And even better, it was a quick DIY Zach was able to do in an afternoon!

The cabinet measures 70 x 12 inches, wide enough to fit about six spice bottles. We wanted to make sure each shelf had enough room to fit taller spices as well (what’s up Tajin) so we ended up doing 10 shelves with six inches of space in between.

We used two different sized pine wood boards — a 2.5 x .5 inch board cut into 12 inch pieces for the shelves and a .75 x .5 inch board cut into 6 inch and 2 inch pieces for the supports. Zach finished them with Danish oil and then nailed them in place. Never thought I’d say this, but now we need more spices to fill the empty spaces!

Do you have an old ironing board cabinet you’re converting into something else? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
