The Kitchen Plan

One of the things at the very top of our list when we were house hunting was an open kitchen. We both love to cook, and the idea of an open concept floor plan where the kitchen, dining room and living room are all one space sounded pretty perfect. When we toured this house, though, we fell in love with the charm of each individual room. We could easily picture ourselves cooking together and entertaining friends in this space, and we found we loved it even more than the original idea we’d had in our heads.

Our plans to update the kitchen are mostly cosmetic and things we can do ourselves. We’re, of course, keeping the original farmhouse sink, the granite countertops (for now), and all of the lower cabinets, just giving them a refresh with some new paint and hardware. The whole kitchen as well as the cabinets will be painted in Bit of Sugar by Behr.

Zach did some serious work removing the upper cabinets and applying wall mud to the spots that didn’t come off as cleanly. We finished painting the kitchen a few nights ago and now we just need to finish the cabinet doors! It’s amazing how much brighter the space feels already.

To replace the upper cabinets we’ll be installing open shelving. It’s something we’ve always wanted and could never have in California because of earthquakes, so we’re really excited to have that as part of our new kitchen! We’ll have two 4 ft shelves next to the sink for all of our frequently used dishes, and two 3 ft shelves next to the fridge for a little coffee corner. We might add a third shelf to either area depending on how things are looking, but we don’t want it getting too crowded.

Other cosmetic updates will be a new sink faucet, lighting in the kitchen and breakfast nook, new flooring, and possibly a backsplash — still deciding! We really want to keep our house true to its original style, just a bit updated, so I’m looking at a lot of classic farmhouse fixtures and hardware to bring some of that style back. Here is our overall inspiration:

Still lots of little details to figure out, and I can’t wait to share everything we end up choosing in a reveal post soon!
